This morning, you will be collected by your guide and driver. The first stop on your journey will be Irazú National Park, home to the still-active Irazú Volcano. At 3,400 meters above sea level, this is the highest volcano in Costa Rica. Here, you’ll take a short hike to the top of the majestic crater, where you can enjoy the stunning views inside. Next, you’ll visit San José, the colonial capital of the country, with the opportunity to explore its beautiful basilica. Afterward, you will continue on to San Gerardo de Dota, one of Costa Rica's favorite birdwatching sites, where you may spot the extraordinary Resplendent Quetzal. San Gerardo is a charming village nestled against the roaring Talamanca Mountain Range and situated in the Savegre River Valley, surrounded by tropical cloud forest and the nearby Paramó-covered mountain peaks. Once you reach the cloud forest, you’ll have the chance to embark on one of its many stunning hikes. Your guide will help you choose the best route for your group. One of the highlights is the 2-kilometer hike to the secret waterfall. After your hike, you’ll head to your accommodation for the night, the wonderful Trogon Lodge, where you’ll stay for two nights. Today begins with a guided morning hike in the forest to seek out one of the most exotic and beautiful birds in the world: the Resplendent Quetzal. For the remainder of the day, you will have the opportunity to explore more areas of the Tropical Cloud Forest and visit the local indigenous village of San Gerardo. This picturesque village offers a fantastic chance to interact with the locals through our authentic community experience, which includes visits to various families in Providencia, Dota. You will also visit the old mill, or “trapiche,” in Los Abuelos, where you can learn about the tradition of producing raw sugar and other sweet foods from sugar cane. In these rural communities, the natural environment plays an integral role in daily life. You’ll take a walk to the Salitre waterfall, passing through a secondary forest filled with streams and waterfalls that range from 5 to 82 meters high. In a fun cooking class, you'll learn to make jams using local fruits, such as blackberry and tomato. The final activity of the day will be an artisanal coffee-making session with a local family. Here, you will discover how coffee was traditionally prepared in their backyard, while listening to their life stories and enjoying the sounds of a guitar as they sing. You'll have the chance to taste one of the best cups of coffee in the world. Along the way, you will pass a crystal-clear river, where you can try your hand at fishing or take a hike along one of the scenic routes around the mountain.
